When it comes to on page video SEO, there are only a few things that you can really optimize.
So, here are the main things you can do to help increase the likelihood that your video will rank highly within YouTube search.
Title: Make sure that your keyword or some variation of your main keyword phrase is in your video title
Description: Since there are only a few lines that show above the SHOW MORE button in the description you definitely need to place your strongest call-to-action link on that first line because most people don’t know that you can click the SHOW MORE link to expand the description. But everything after those first couple lines can be whatever you want. I recommend treating the description of your video like a short article. However there is a character limit for the description, so it don’t make it some elaborate composition, just make sure you fully describe what people are going to get out of the video. The text in the description is also an opportunity for you to add your main keywords you’re targeting for that particular video if it makes sense. But don’t stuff your keywords in there. Always remember to write for a human, not a robot.
Tags: I generally select 3-7 tags that best describe my video. Usually they’re variations of the main keyword I’m trying to rank for.
And example of this would be…
Main Keyword: teeth whitening kit
Tags: teeth whitening kit reviews, teeth whitening kits that work, teeth whitening kit for sensitive teeth
A technique you may also want to try is to search for the keyword you’re wanting to rank for in YouTube.
See which videos are ranking in the top positions.
Copy the names of those YouTube channels or the titles of the videos that are ranking and use those as your tags.
Doing this will help siphon traffic from those popular videos because your video will start to show up next to those videos in the sidebar and after those videos are played as a related video.
But remember to make sure you have an eye-catching thumbnail, otherwise it doesn’t matter how much you optimize your video, you’re just not going to get that many clicks.
Additionally, a free tool you should check out that can help you optimize your channels and videos is TubeBuddy.
So, those are the basics of how to optimize the on page SEO for your YouTube videos.
Make sure your keyword or some variation of your keyword (it doesn’t have to be word-for-word) are in your video Title, Description, and Tags.
